Building Our Own Private Media Library
I grew up in the 80s, and my parents had an expansive collection of personally recorded movies in our family’s private media library.
Naturally, when I moved out on my own, I began to build my own collection of store-bought movies. And over the years that collection has expanded to include a host of DVDs.
Then when I got married and eventually had children, that collection grew even more.
Media Library of DVDs, VHS tapes & Blu-Ray Discs
I just put the finishing touches on our master list of DVDs, VHS tapes & Blu-Ray discs. The list totals over 500 titles. Most of these videos are movies, with a smattering of assorted TV show series and informational documentaries.
My hope is to be more purposeful in our video-watching.
Personally, I want to spend less time watching online streaming video. This means also spending less time looking for something to watch on those platforms.
(In fact, I’d love to eventually end all of our streaming service subscriptions, but I need the OK from other household members first.)
And then I want to spend more time seeking out what we specifically want to add to the collection and weeding out what is unwatchable and unwanted.
I hope to have a curated collection of good stuff to watch in our media library. And then, I’d like to either watch them privately or in the company of friends, family &/or trusted acquaintances.
We purchased a projector & big screen long ago with the intention of having indoor movies shown periodically in our barn. We’ve done that to a small degree in the past, and I’d like to do it more often in the future.
Personally, I have fond memories of going to the movies, and I’d like to recreate that kind of entertainment again for myself — and for others who’d like to join me in that entertaining past-time.
And this is how I’m going about it. 🙂 See what else I’m doing to go old school.
